Dear audience, do you know Peau d’Âne?

Do you know the famous story written in 1694 by Charles Perrault, criticised by Boileau, adored by all the courtesans of Louis XIV, appreciated by Flaubert and adapted to music by Jacques Demy?

Perrault gives us his verses and we can be amused by the many hints to courtesan life in Versailles. The new French opera, the famous “Lyric Tragedy” by Lully and Quinault, received little support. Art critics such as Racine and Boileau criticise this new art form as being childish. Perrault defends burlesque, the right to dream and to marvel.

We pay tribute to this music-loving writer by offering a lively reading of Donkey Skin, accompanied by baroque music of the 17th century. It contains excerpts of Lully’s opera as well as the trio sonatas by Marin Marais and several court tunes by Michel Lambert reinforcing the expression of the characters and creating an original sound world.

... « Sans craindre donc qu’on me condamne
De mal employer mon loisir,
Je vais, pour contenter votre juste désir,
Vous conter tout au long l’histoire de Peau d’Ane »...
Charles Perrault
