Theatre creators and actors of tomorrow take on the Greek classics
For the coming academic year, the students of Conservatorium Antwerp, KASK Drama Ghent, LUCA Leuven and RITCS Brussels are diving into the Greek classics. The cherry on top of this intense study period is a residency at KVS: for two weeks, the four most important drama schools of Flanders are taking over the theatre. If you are unafraid of experiment and can’t wait to discover the theatre creators that will be making waves in years to come: this is your chance.
During the first week, the actors take on three ancient classics with iconic women in the lead: Trojan Women and Alcestis by Euripides, and Antigone by Sophocles. They will study the texts, in a Dutch translation by Johan Boonen, for a week with the help of three coaches. On 8 February they will present the resulting staged reading. The second week takes the students a step further: they bring the texts to life on stage with dramaturgic support. Actors and coaches take free rein with the original texts, adapting them as they go. This exercise culminates in a showcase by each school.
