ARTONOV Festival Brussels

The next edition of ARTONOV Festival will be created around the theme 'What the day owes the night'.

It’s with a quote from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, “As for the future, your task is not to foresee it, but to enable it,” that we launch the sixth edition of the Festival ARTONOV during a period of uncertainty and difficulty.

The program which was already closed in February 2020, and includes creations by Belgian, Australian, Canadian and Japanese artists, needed to be modified according to the restrictions of the epidemic which has heavily affected all modes of transportation. We have decided to readapt this edition to the current health and safety regulations while maintaining the theme, “what the day owes to the night,” as well as the taste of artistic adventure we have defended since the first edition.

Uniting the East and the West, the artists of this edition take hold of light and enchantment in order to reveal to us a world of multiple transparencies. However, the shadow is never too far, nor is its reflection. Furthermore, in ancient Greek, it is often represented with the same word, “skia”. Shadow and reflection. Projection of the form, without material or contour, depends on multiple existing living variables: movement, the source of light or the object itself. The shadow itself can represent darkness, hell, the invisible world and the depth desired by the mystic all at the same time. It is uncertain and moving. Cartoons and cinema have fun with it, as well as ourselves. If the desire of shadow haunts us, it is because it allows the breakthrough and interruption of light.

This year we opted for venues of more contemporary architecture, those of COOP in Anderlecht, and See U in Ixelles in order to defend the urban projects which present a similar dimension and values to those of Art Nouveau and Art Déco; styles which continue to be the common theme of this festival.
