Brussels’ best independent cinemas take centre stage
Put away your comfortable, ‘work-from-home clothes’, leave the house and take in a concert! In the imposing setting of a famous cultural temple, at an extraordinary location or in a romantic park... this summer, Brussels is, once again, offering an incredible range of musical stages to Belgian and international musicians. Whether you swear by your favourite genre or like discovering new music, there’s plenty of choice and something for everyone. Here are a few of our ideas, to get you inspired.
The classical musicians and lyrical singers of the past were the rock stars of the day
From 1 July to 31 August, the Musicorum Festival (previously called the Festival des Minimes) offers you the chance, from Tuesday to Friday (from 12:15 to 13:00) to enjoy free concerts in the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium. This partnership between the ‘Centre d’Oeuvres de Merode’ and the RMFAB is now on its fourth edition and always provides an original line-up of international artists and young virtuosos.
Brussels’ trusty Midis Minimes festival, at the Royal Conservatoire of Brussels is treating us to no less than 43 concerts by renowned artists and promising future stars! Here too, the concerts take place at lunchtime (12:15), every weekday from 1 July to 31 August. The line-up, both eclectic and surprising, takes visitors on a journey through a variety of musical periods and genres.
A varied line-up of open-air performances
This year you can enjoy live music in the stunning Theatre de Verdure for not two, but three days! Brossela Festival and Djangofolies are joining forces to present Brosella XXS, on 9, 10 and 11 July. This year, the programme will focus on Brussels/Belgium-based artists, with gypsy jazz on Friday evening, folk on Saturday and jazz on Sunday! And on top of that, between shows, why not enjoy some tasty, locally produced delights and DJ sets at the summer bar?.
Music has been given a special place in the programming for this year’s Hello Summer. With the tellingly-named Back on Stage, (lien à.p.d. 18/6) the City of Brussels has put together a programme that celebrates the richness and cultural diversity of our capital. From 3 to 22 August, take in DJ sets, hip-hop and rap, French pop music, rock and much more in the gardens of the Cité administrative de l'État (behind the achter de Congress Column). Even your little ones will be spoiled at this summer gathering spot for music lovers!
World music in unique locations in Brussels
From Thursday 1 July to Thursday 26 August, Anderlecht cultural centre Escale du Nord is hosting the fourth edition of Escales Estivales. Nine Thursdays and 10 free concerts in the lovely garden next to Espace Carême. From 18:00, stretch out on the grass an soak up an eclectic and colourful musical line-up, with, among others, African fusion, cumbia, oriental folk and afrobeat. EDN.Bar has got the food and drinks covered!
Expect the unexpected at the Hide & Seek Festival! For years now, MuziekPublique has been organising this extraordinary Brussels festival that, through world music concerts, transports visitors to some of the most extraordinary places in the capital! Previous editions, for example, saw concerts held in a festively decorated tram, during a shamanistic ceremony in a cemetery and in a former swingers' club! The common thread: all venues are carefully selected to blend traditional music with heritage. From 23 to 29 August.
