To the romantic cycle Dichterliebe, in which Robert Schumann set poems by Heinrich Heine, Bernard Foccroulle has added new compositions setting texts by the English playwright Martin Crimp. These are the words of a young woman trying to flee the bombardment of her city and to cross the European border to reach a safe and peaceful zone. Zauberland – staged by Katie Mitchell and performed by Julia Bullock and Cédric Tiberghien – presents a dialogue between the past and the present, between a Europe entrenched behind its borders and the continent’s eastern and Mediterranean roots.
