Quiz question: what do Solange, Frank Ocean, Phoenix, Sébastien Tellier and Gotan Project have in common? Yup: Chassol! They are all namely impressed by what the Parisian composer and pianist Christophe Chassol calls his ‘ultrascores’. Basically: a fusion of video and rhythmic audio bundled into a hypnotic experience. Following thematic albums like ‘Big Sun’ (a reflection on his trip to homeland Martinique) and ‘Indiamore’ (which focussed on India), he has now been inspired by the book ‘Het Kralenspel’.
‘Das Glasperlenspiel’' is the utopian novel by German writer Herman Hesse, who received the Nobel Prize for Literature for it in 1943. Chassol got to work and recorded film material in Tokyo and Paris, providing the images with music in his own headstrong manner.
